Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about MedBillHero and how it works with your Medicare claims

Using MedBillHero

Can I see all my Medicare claims in one place?

Yes. We pull in all your Part A (hospital), Part B (doctors/outpatient), and Part D (prescriptions) claims into one dashboard. Normally Part A and B are on Medicare.gov in different sections, and Part D isn't shown at all - you have to log into your pharmacy provider's separate website to see those.

How far back can I see my claims?

We automatically sync the last 13 months of claims, which covers a full year plus a little extra. This is enough for most people to track their spending and understand their recent medical history. If you need to see older claims - up to 10 years depending on what Medicare has - you can upgrade to access your full claims history. For reference, Medicare.gov only shows the last 3 years.

Can I track how much I've spent toward my deductible?

Yes for Part A and Part B - we show your deductible progress and exactly how much you've paid and how much is left. For Part D (prescriptions), it's a bit different: your pharmacy provider sets the deductible and Medicare doesn't give us that information. But we do show you all your prescription spending, so if you know your Part D deductible is $2,000, you can easily see when you've hit it. This is still much better than what most pharmacy providers show you - their websites are often outdated and very basic.

Can I ask questions about a specific claim?

Yes. Ask our chat assistant about any claim - like 'Why was I charged $45 on August 15th?' - and it will find that claim and explain exactly what happened, why you were charged, and what the service was for.

Can a family member or caregiver help me with my account?

Yes. You can share your login information with someone you trust so they can help you understand your bills and manage your healthcare. Just be aware that they'll have full access to your medical information, so only share with people you're comfortable with.

Understanding Your Bills

Why do providers charge so much more than what Medicare pays?

This is completely normal and happens on almost every claim. Providers bill their 'list price,' but Medicare only pays their pre-negotiated rates. The provider writes off the difference - you never owe that huge gap. You only pay your deductible (if you haven't met it yet) and then your coinsurance (usually 20% of what Medicare allows).

What's the difference between what the provider charges, what Medicare allows, and what I owe?

The provider charges their list price (often very high). Medicare 'allows' only their contracted rate (much lower). If you haven't met your deductible yet, you pay that first. After your deductible is met, Medicare typically pays 80% of the allowed amount and you pay 20% coinsurance. You never pay more than your deductible plus coinsurance, no matter how high the provider's original charge was.

Why was I charged for my annual wellness visit if it's supposed to be free?

This usually happens when your doctor discusses or treats a health problem during your wellness visit. Medicare then codes it as a regular office visit instead of a wellness visit, which means you owe coinsurance. This is very common but sometimes avoidable - if the visit was primarily for your wellness check and the other issue was minor, you may be able to ask your doctor to recode it.

Why do I see diagnosis codes that Medicare.gov doesn't show me?

Medicare completely hides diagnosis codes from you on their website, but we show them automatically on every claim with a full explanation in plain English. You'll see what condition or symptom you were being treated for, what it means, what symptoms it typically involves, and what kind of follow-up care you might expect. This gives you important context for understanding why you received certain services and what your doctor found.

How does MedBillHero know if something is wrong with my bill?

We check every claim against Medicare's rules for common issues: duplicate charges, services that should have been free, amounts that seem unusually high, and other red flags. We can't catch everything, but we flag the most common problems automatically so you don't have to figure it out yourself.

Getting Help with Problems

What should I do if MedBillHero flags a potential issue?

First, read the explanation we provide about what might be wrong. Sometimes we flag things for various reasons - maybe it's an unusually high bill compared to your history, or something that looks like a duplicate. You can then decide whether to contact your provider's billing department or Medicare. Our chat assistant can help you figure out the right next step and what to say. You can also mark issues as 'resolved' once you've dealt with them, which keeps any unresolved problems front and center when you log in so you don't forget about them.

Can MedBillHero help me write a letter to my doctor about a billing error?

Yes. Our chat assistant can help you draft a letter explaining the issue and what you're asking them to fix. You can then send it to your doctor's billing department. The assistant knows your claim details and can include the specific codes and amounts in the letter.

How do I appeal a charge with Medicare?

We can help you understand what happened, whether an appeal makes sense, and guide you through the process - but you'll need to file the formal appeal yourself with Medicare. The good news is you have 120 days from when you receive a bill to appeal, which is plenty of time to figure things out with our help.

Can I contact Medicare directly from MedBillHero?

We don't call Medicare for you, but we can give you the right phone number and help you understand what to ask when you call. Our chat assistant can even help you prepare what you want to say before you make the call.

Where can I find official Medicare documentation?

Our chat assistant pulls information from official Medicare handbooks and documentation. You can ask for specific rules or coverage details and we'll explain them clearly and cite the official sources if you want to verify anything.

Privacy & Security

Who can see my medical information?

Only you (and anyone you choose to share your login with). Your information is encrypted and stored securely. We're legally required to follow HIPAA rules just like your doctor's office - that means strict privacy protections for your medical data.

Does MedBillHero sell my data?

Never. We don't sell, share, or give your information to advertisers, data brokers, insurance companies, or anyone else. Your medical data stays completely private. We make money from our paid plans, not from selling your information.

Is the chat assistant really private?

Yes. Unlike ChatGPT or other public AI tools, our assistant is HIPAA compliant and runs on secure servers. Your conversations and medical information stay completely private and are never used to train AI models or shared with anyone.

What happens if I delete my account?

All your data is permanently deleted from our system. You can do this anytime from your account settings. We don't keep copies or backups after you delete your account.

How does MedBillHero access my Medicare data?

We connect through Medicare's official secure system - the same one that powers Medicare.gov. You log in once with your Medicare.gov credentials, and Medicare securely sends us your claims data. We never see your Medicare password, and you can disconnect us anytime from your Medicare.gov account settings.

Will using MedBillHero affect my Medicare account or benefits?

No. We only read your claims data - we can't change anything, file claims, or affect your Medicare benefits in any way. Think of it like checking your bank statement online - you're just viewing information that already exists.

Why should I use MedBillHero instead of just Medicare.gov?

Medicare.gov shows basic claim information with codes and numbers, but doesn't explain what anything means, doesn't show diagnosis codes at all, splits Part A/B/D into different places (and doesn't show Part D at all), and doesn't check for billing errors. We translate everything into plain English, catch problems automatically, and give you a complete picture of your healthcare in one place.

Account & Technical

How often does my claims data update?

We check for new claims multiple times per day to keep your information as current as possible. However, we can only show claims after Medicare has processed them and made them available. You might see claims on Medicare.gov a bit before they show up in MedBillHero because Medicare updates their website and their data system on different schedules. Usually new claims appear within 1-2 weeks after your provider submits them. The good news is you have 120 days to appeal any issues, so this timing gives you plenty of time to catch and fix problems.

Does MedBillHero work on my phone?

Yes. You can use it on your phone, tablet, or computer - whichever is most convenient for you.

What if I forget my password?

You can reset it from the login page using your email address. We'll send you a link to create a new password.

Do I need to do anything after I sign up?

Nope. After you connect your Medicare account once, we automatically pull in all your claims going forward. Just check back whenever you have a question, get a new bill, or want to see your spending.

What if I want to stop using MedBillHero?

You can disconnect your Medicare account anytime from your account settings, or delete your account entirely. There's no cancellation process or fees - you can just stop using it whenever you want.
